CanNor Supports Improved Communications Technology in Nunavut
IQALUIT, NUNAVUT--(Marketwire - Oct. 30, 2012) - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, announced today an investment to support the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Summit in Iqaluit.
"The Government of Canada recognizes the key role of information and communications infrastructure in the economic development of Nunavut," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This forum is an opportunity to bring together interested parties to identify the ICT challenges and requirements of the territory, in order to develop a long-term plan which will meet the needs of Nunavut's growing northern economy."
"The Nunavut Broadband Development Corporation is pleased to host the 2012 Nunavut ICT Summit, bringing together a wide range of stakeholders including users, service providers, governments, and Inuit Organizations to help develop a holistic, long-term ICT strategy for Nunavut," said Darrell Ohokannoak, President and Chairman of the Board, Nunavut Broadband Development Corporation.
The Information and Communications Technology Summit takes place in Iqaluit, Nunavut from October 31 to November 1, 2012. CanNor's investment of $110,000 for the Summit recognizes that now is the time to plan the path forward so that Nunavut's ICT is able to support the pace of the territory's economic development. The Summit will draw on expertise and input from representatives of the private sector, all levels of government, Inuit organizations and members of the public from across Nunavut. An ICT Task Force will be established to produce a long-term plan to both map and monitor Nunavut's ICT needs.
This investment is funded by CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
