NovaSom Chief Medical Officer Featured on the Cover of Sleep Review Magazine
NovaSom, Inc., the leader in home sleep testing and cost-saving solutions for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) management, today announces its Chief Medical Officer is featured on the cover of Sleep Review magazine.
Sleep Review: The Journal for Sleep Specialists (www.sleepreviewmag.com), is dedicated to helping its 20,000 readers stay on top of changes in the rapidly growing field of diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Each issue features thought leaders, case reports, innovative research findings, business news, and product and service introductions, as well as offering inspiring stories of leading sleep centers and useful ideas for improving sleep laboratory operations.
The cover story regarding NovaSom's Michael Coppola, MD, FCCP, reveals his thinking that the sleep medicine profession is on the brink of a new standard for diagnosing sleep apnea, with out of center sleep testing (OCST) being mainstream. As one of the early pioneers to publish the benefits of OCST, the Chief Medical Officer of NovaSom now aims to make his mark in sleep medicine as the person who shepherded the large-scale implementation of the testing modality.
Michael Coppola, MD, CMO, NovaSom, said, “Out of center testing is increasingly well accepted as an effective tool in addressing this under-diagnosed epidemic, reflecting rapidly rising awareness among consumers, employers, primary care, anesthesiologists, dentists and payers of the costs, prevalence and complications of OSA. In fact, NovaSom now has unique offerings for sleep centers, primary care physicians and anesthesiologists, placing the American Academy of Sleep Medicine standards and its membership at the center of the solution to this epidemic.”
Richard Hassett, MD, CEO, NovaSom, said, “We've been offering at-home testing for over ten years, but the market has grown and it is no longer one-size-fits-all. Now we have AccuSom at Home™ for community providers, interpreted by board certified sleep specialists, AccuSom Deliver™ for Sleep Centers seeking to offer Out of Center Sleep Testing, and most recently AccuSom Safe Recovery™, designed to enable anesthesiologists to rapidly and accurately diagnose OSA pre-operatively and develop a patient management plan that minimizes the risk of adverse respiratory events and other associated complications during and after surgery.”
NovaSom launched AccuSom Safe Recovery™ this month at the annual conferences of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), both in Washington, D.C. Guidelines from the American Society of Anesthesiologists recommend routine pre-operative screening and diagnosis of OSA to allow anesthesiologists to make informed decisions regarding anesthesia technique, airway management and patient monitoring during and following surgery.
With AccuSom Safe Recovery the test is delivered to the patient's home as early as the next day. Each morning the patient data is wirelessly transmitted via the Verizon Network to NovaSom's MediTrack platform for same-day analysis and interpretation by an American Academy of Sleep Medicine board certified sleep specialist. The diagnostic report is immediately accessible to the prescribing anesthesiologist.
NovaSom's sleep testing technology directly measures the parameters recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to diagnose OSA, and has been proven clinically equivalent to traditional in-facility polysomnography in two peer-reviewed publications.
Anesthesiologists can begin ordering the AccuSom Safe Recovery test on November 1, 2012.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) affects 40 million Americans, of which 18 million have moderate to severe disease. Of these, a startling 85% of sufferers are undiagnosed and therefore untreated, generating significant medical expense for patients and the healthcare system. Nearly half of all OSA patients also suffer from one or more serious health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or heart failure that are either aggravated or caused by OSA. Treating OSA reduces medical expenses, improves patient quality of life and lowers associated health risks.
