2011 was a successful year for cider mixes in Germany as the former niche product grew into a market of its own. The two segments - traditional, pure cider on the one hand and flavoured/mixed cider on the other –- showed completely different development. Traditional, pure cider stagnated whilst cider mixes increased their volume six-fold.
Traditional, pure cider is mainly consumed in south-west Germany and above all in the Rhine-main region. It has a slightly dated image, but is associated with joie de vivre and sociality. Consumption of cider peaks during the summer, when traditional cider gastronomy opens and consumers may enjoy their beverage outside in a garden with their friends and family. The concept of the traditional cider gastronomy is comparable to the one of 'Biergarten'. Traditional, pure cider is often consumed by mature consumers
(over 40 years old ), who enjoy the traditions and history attached to the products and prefer regional products.
Although cider mixes have been in the market in previous years (albeit in very small volumes), producers became more innovative in 2011, when they implemented current cocktail flavours (like elderflower for 'prosecco hugo') in their cider products. The flavours are, however, expected to change according to current trends in the beverage industry.
Looking forward, further development of segments such as sparkling cider wine variants, cider rosé and mixes is expected. This differentiation will be also translated into a more diverse packaging landscape and the entrance of new distribution channels.
