“This is a tremendous achievement by a distinguished, internationally renowned leader of our faculty and clinical staff,” says Richard D. Cordova, FACHE, president and CEO, Children's Hospital Los Angeles. “At Children's Hospital, our core values include establishing the best practices for the care of our patients and Dr. Ford has taken a leadership position in advancing this priority. We are proud of his election to the American College of Surgeons Board of Regents and his leadership will make certain those important standards for education and surgical practices will be available to hospitals across the country.”

Founded in 1913, the American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of top flight surgeons dedicated to improving the quality of care for surgical patients by identifying and establishing high standards for surgical education and practice. Members, referred to as “FELLOWS,” have completed rigorous evaluations and maintain premier qualifications, practices and conduct in their field, allowing them the honor of carrying the letters “FACS” after their names.

Ford and five other surgeons were elected to the 22-member ACS Board of Regents by the association's 270-member Board of Governors. The Regents are responsible for the management and control of the business and affairs of the college and individual Regents serve on ACS committees and advisory councils.

The ACS sponsors continuing medical education programs, such as the Clinical Congress, enabling surgeons to stay up-to-date with the latest studies and research pertaining to surgical topics. Over the years, cancer and trauma patients, among others, have benefitted from the college's work and recommendations to hospitals to provide them the best possible care. In addition, the college developed training programs for emergency care and the treatment of injured and critically ill patients, while encouraging hospitals to upgrade their trauma care facilities. The organization also actively researches legislative issues and regulatory policies governing the field of surgery.

Ford has performed numerous noteworthy responsibilities for the ACS. He was second vice-president-elect of the college from 2010 to 2011 and served as a governor from 2005–2011, and on the board of Governors Executive Committee from 2009–2010. In past years, he was vice-chair of the Executive Committee, chaired and was ex officio member of the Nominating Committee, and was a member of and liaison to the Committee on Surgical Infections. In addition, he has served on the Committee on Trauma, the Committee for the Forum on Fundamental Surgical Problems, and the Board of Regents Members Services Liaison Committee. He is also a member of the Program Committee and is the surgical forum representative for the Advisory Council for Pediatric Surgery.

In addition to his duties at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Ford also holds the position of vice-chairman and vice-dean for Medical Education at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
