Abington, MA (PRWEB) July 09, 2012

E. Michael Thomas Jr., DMD, of Abington Family Dental Care, has joined an elite group of dental professionals who can now treat patients with gum disease using the PerioLase MVP-7 laser. Dr. Thomas hopes that this new option for periodontal disease treatment will convince more patients to seek treatment for this problem and its serious side effects.

Abington Family Dental Care is concerned with the high number of American adults that suffer from gum disease. Of even greater concern is the fact that many of them go untreated. Untreated periodontal disease can lead to additional health issues such as heart disease or pancreatic cancer. Dr. Thomas has trained on the new LANAP procedure in hopes that additional options will convince more patients to seek treatment. Only about one percent of dental professionals are qualified to offer the LANAP procedure. LANAP is the only federally cleared dental laser procedure, and is specially designed for periodontal disease treatment.

During the LANAP procedure, Dr. Thomas starts with a probe to determine how deep the gum pockets are. Then he uses the fiber optic tipped laser to kill the bacteria in those gum pockets and to selectively remove any gum tissue that has become diseased. Healthy tissue is left intact. Tarter is removed from the exposed tooth ultrasonically. The laser is then used to stimulate the remaining healthy tissue to re-attach to the root of the tooth. The laser is also used to stimulate the regenerative properties of the bone.

The procedure is considered to be minimally invasive, and sutures are not necessary, which helps to speed up the healing process. Most patients report little discomfort or pain and a quick recovery time. Dr. Thomas meets with patients on an individual basis to determine whether they are good candidates for this procedure. Treating gum disease is much easier when it is in the early stages.
