CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- (Farnborough Airshow) – Goodrich Corporation GR congratulates Lowell Observatory on achieving its "first light" milestone for the Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT). Goodrich's ISR Systems business assisted in the development of key aspects of this advanced telescope system including the primary and secondary mirror assembly and the prime focus instrument.
In astronomy, "first light" is the first use of a telescope to take an astronomical image after it has been constructed. The DCT achieved "first light" in May 2012
The DCT has a 4.3 meter (170 inch) aperture, similar to the SOAR Telescope delivered by Goodrich in 1994 and located in Chile. Built by Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, the DCT is the fifth largest telescope in the continental United States and will be used by Lowell astronomers to further research fundamental aspects of our universe.
The Discovery Channel will air a "Making of the DCT" film documentary this fall. Goodrich is pleased to be a sponsor of the DCT First Light Gala being held in Flagstaff on July 21 and looks forward to the scientific contributions that will result from this flagship research telescope.
