A recent study, published in Obesity (Sliver Spring), investigating the role of anti-oxidants in non-alcoholic fatty liver suggests that, in animal studies, supplementation of Lipoic Acid, a universal anti-oxidant, prevented the accumulation of liver triglyceride (-68.2%) through stimulation of mitochondrial (cellular energy plant) antioxidant defenses and that the Lipoic Acid treatment stimulated SIRT1 and SIRT3 genes. According to this recent study, Lipoic Acid supplementation increased the production of SOD (60.6%) in laboratory animals.

Dr. David Sinclair, a professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, in a study funded by National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, found that SIRT1, the mammalian equivalent of Sir2, helped control gene activity and the results indicated that increasing SIRT1 activity could increase genomic stability, which would means longer cellular life.
