Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee will address attendees of the York Regional Police 10th Anniversary of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination - Celebrating our Community event on Sunday, April 15, 2012.

"I am honoured to be part of this celebration, to work with the York Region Police and raise awareness about the impact of discrimination on our communities," says Ms. Jiwani. "The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination provides us with an opportunity to promote respect for the rights and freedoms outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a pledge that defines the work of UN Women, York Regional Police, and any organization or individual working to eliminate racism, stigma, and prejudice."

"Sunday marks the 10 anniversary where York Region's Police brings the community together in aims of eradicating racial discrimination" says Sergeant Paul Chiang, one of the organizers of the event. "Ms. Jiwani will be bringing the UN Women perspective to this crucial worldwide issue, as well as solidifying a partnership with the York Regional Police. This event is an opportunity for all of our Diverse Community to come together & speak out against all forms of discrimination."

The event will include food, entertainment, booths, and cultural music between 12-4pm at Milliken Mills High School in Markham.

The first article of the United Nations' (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights", an entitlement that is applied without distinction based on race, sex, gender, language, religion, or any other form of discrimination. The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed with a series of events and activities worldwide each year, to promote public consciousness in regards to the negative consequences of racial discrimination and prejudice of any kind.
