New Nordic Ski Venue Offers World-Class Facilities and Golden Tourism Boost
GOLDEN, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 17, 2012) - Today, Member of Parliament David Wilks officially opened the newly upgraded Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.
"I am pleased that our Government has delivered on this commitment for Golden residents," said Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "Our investment in the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre will provide exciting outdoor recreational prospects for residents, athletes, and tourists in their modern, sustainable ski facilities, as well as more local jobs."
Funding of $400,000 was provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Columbia Shuswap Regional District, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Columbia Basin Trust, B.C. Lottery Corporation, Southern Interior Development Corporation, and many volunteers also contributed to the project.
With the funding support, Golden Nordic Ski Society was able to expand and upgrade their ski venue into an internationally renowned facility and tourist attraction. The new facilities include a day lodge, parking lot, and expanded trail network
A large variety of new user groups, including disabled individuals, seniors, youth, and local and international athletes will benefit from improved access to affordable recreational and race activities in this stunning outdoor setting. This project is a key resource for the local sport tourism economy, and will strengthen the region's ability to attract and host sporting events from the international community.
"We are proud to see our vision come to fruition," said Jeff Dolinsky, President of the Golden Nordic Ski Society. "The upgrades here at Dawn Mountain will serve to bring high level competitions to Golden and act as a base for Nordic ski athletes from across Canada. We thank the Government of Canada for their important contribution. This project is a unique asset and a true legacy for future generations."
