New Jersey Court Rules in Astrazeneca's Favor on Seroquel Trial (AZN)

3/18/2010-Dow Jones reported Thursday that a jury in a New Jersey state court rejected a Louisiana plaintiff's claims that Astrazeneca's (NYSE: AZN) blockbuster antipsychotic drug Seroquel caused diabetes.

The case was the first of as many as 10,400 lawsuits against the U.K. company pending in U.S. courts, in which users of Seroquel allege the drug caused diabetes or other injuries, to go to trial.

Though around a quarter of the cases have been abandoned by the plaintiffs' attorneys.

"The heart of these cases are unproven claims that Seroquel causes diabetes in individual plaintiffs," said company spokesman Tony Jewell, "In case after case, jurors, judges and even plaintiffs' lawyers themselves have found that plaintiffs simply cannot show through any accepted scientific method that AstraZeneca is responsible for their alleged injuries."
