3/8/2010-Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) said Monday that it has agreed to pay $4 million to settle federal charges stemming from a 2005 chlorine spill that resulted in nine deaths.

After a train derailed in Greenville, S.C., causing the spill, the federal government alleged the company violated the Clean Water Act and hazardous materials laws.

Under the settlement terms, Norfolk Southern will provide incident-command-system training to staff, replace at least 3,000 fish in a nearby pond and plant vegetation along the banks of a creek affected by the spill in a $100,000 supplemental project.
