Litigation Update from the Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella Lawyers at the Roberts Law Firm

The Roberts Law Firm announces that drug defect claims involving the oral contraceptives Yasmin and Yaz have been consolidated and transferred to a federal court in East St. Louis, Ill.

On Oct. 1, 2009, the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation entered an order transferring litigation involving claims against the manufacturers of the oral contraceptives Yasmin and Yaz to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois (in re: Yasmin and Yaz [Drospirenone] Marketing, Sales Practices and Product Liability Litigation, MDL no. 2100.)

The Roberts Law Firm represents women injured after taking Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella. These contraceptives contain drospirenone, a synthetic form of the hormone progestin. Some women who have taken these drugs have allegedly suffered such serious side effects as:

  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular accident)
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Gallbladder disease resulting in injury or necessitating removal (cholecystectomy)
  • Kidney failure
  • Renal failure
  • Pancreatitis
  • Death

Yaz and Yasmin are made and sold by Bayer Corp. (NYSE: BAY) and its subsidiaries Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and Bayer HealthCare. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Yasmin as an oral contraceptive in 2001. Yaz received FDA approval in 2006 as both a birth control pill and treatment for premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In 2008, Ocella, a generic form of Yaz and Yasmin sold by Barr Pharmaceuticals, was released into the market.

Suits have been filed against Bayer and Barr Pharmaceuticals alleging that the drug makers failed to adequately research their products, fraudulently concealed and negligently failed to warn users of the risks associated with the drugs and misrepresented the safety of these drugs compared with that of other birth control pills.
