DETAILS:

For the sixth year in a row, Concord NH’s 8th graders, who attend Rundlett Middle School, will make real-life decisions to help them learn financial skills, at the CU 4 Reality™ Financial Literacy Fair on April 21 and 22, sponsored by NH Federal Credit Union of Concord, in partnership with America’s Credit Union Museum. There is no cost to the school for participating – the transportation and costs are provided by NH Federal Credit Union.

The program uses an in-class curriculum during the school year to teach participants important skills that will equip students to handle money responsibly, set and adhere to budgets, and avoid the pitfalls of debt.

The CU 4 Reality Financial Literacy Fair is a culminating, day-long event that will give Rundlett students a chance to see how their own career selections impact their financial well-being and their life choices. At the CU 4 Reality Fair, the students will create a spending plan based on a salary and juggle needs versus wants, to make sure they are living within their means.

Participants will meet with representatives providing them with transportation, housing, utilities, retailers, like Best Buy and Old Navy, to help them understand the real expenses they will face in adulthood and the choices they’ll need to make to avoid falling in to debt.

This program began in 2003, with a curriculum co-written by four Rundlett Middle School teachers, Diane Barlow, Peter Bowler, Laurie Haney, and Bill Ryan. The curriculum combines classroom work with the CU 4 Reality Fair, where students take the lessons they learned and apply them. NH Federal Credit Union has been working closely with Rundlett Middle School since the inception of the program, providing classroom presentations, underwriting the costs of the program, and organizing the CU 4 Reality Fair.
