DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/b80891/phocuswrights_glo) has announced the addition of PhoCusWright's new publication "Global Online Travel Overview: Comparing Three Major Regions: U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific" to their offering.

Online travel booking has snaked its way around the world, but not without hiccups, missteps and challenges. Three main regions dominate online travel booking today: the U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific (APAC). PhoCusWright estimates that these regions represent a large percentage of the total global travel market and a vast majority of the global online leisure and unmanaged business travel market.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Overview
  • Total Online Travel Markets: U.S., Europe and APAC Key Findings
  • Mature vs. Emerging Online Travel Markets
  • Global Online Travel Market Surpasses US$200B
  • Market-by-Market Comparison
  • The Fastest-Growing Online Travel Markets
  • Methodology: Market Size and Forecasts

Methodology:

PhoCusWright has been tracking the dynamics of the online travel industry since 1998. This reports estimates and forecasts cover U.S.-, Europe- and Asia Pacific-based travel businesses, including travel suppliers (airlines, hotels, car rental companies, packagers, railways and cruise lines) and online travel agencies. The key findings in this report were culled from three recent PhoCusWright reports: U.S. Online Travel Overview Ninth Edition, European Online Travel Overview Fifth Edition and Asia Pacific Online Travel Overview Third Edition. Actual results are presented for 2008 and forecasts for 2009-2011 for the total travel market and the online leisure/unmanaged business category.

Unless otherwise indicated, all online gross bookings and share figures refer to leisure/unmanaged business travel. Unmanaged business travel refers to all air, car and hotel expenses associated with business travel in firms that do not have a travel policy dictating the channel, type of travel, supplier or fare/rate uses. Corporate online booking systems are excluded from this analysis (for more information on the corporate travel market, see PhoCusWright's U.S. Corporate Travel Distribution Fourth Edition). Corporate travel bookings are included in the total travel market figures, but not the online figures.

European estimates and projections include the first 15 European Union (EU) countries as well as Switzerland and Norway. For APAC, estimates and projections include 11 countries: Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Figures for 2008 are based on actual company results. Projections for 2009-2011 are based on company interviews, consumer research and market developments. PhoCusWright also considers historical growth and economic trends when developing its forecasts. Estimates and projections are for gross bookings the retail value of travel sold over the Internet after cancellations.

Where possible, travel that is researched online but booked offline using a toll-free telephone number provided on the Web site is excluded from online gross bookings figures. Total travel figures (online and offline) are used to determine Internet penetration for each market segment.
