Transplace Appoints New Board Members James W. Down, Tom Escott

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Transplace, a leading provider of transportation management services and logistics technology solutions, announced today that its Board of Directors has voted to appoint new members James (Jim) W. Down, the previous long-time head of Mercer Management Consulting, and Tom Escott, former president of Schneider Logistics. Both seasoned industry leaders bring decades of experience, business acumen and successes to the leadership direction of Transplace.

"Jim Down and Tom Escott’s extensive knowledge of supply chain management and their successful track records in directing and advising many of the country's top logistics players add tremendous depth to our Board," said Transplace President and CEO Tom Sanderson. “Since our acquisition in December, recruiting the best minds in the industry to our Board of Directors was the next logical step in continuing our strength in leadership and growing our business.”

In addition to heading Mercer Management Consulting, Jim Down has held a number of management positions with Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) and Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Down currently serves on several boards of directors, including the Board of Visitors for the Columbia University School of Engineering & Applied Science.

Tom Escott has served as the president of Schneider Logistics and Caliber Logistics and also founded ShipLogix, a software company that provides web-hosted transportation management solutions.

Escott will present at the annual Shipper Symposium in May, offering the attendees access to his knowledge and views of transportation and third party logistics challenges and solutions. He will join other speakers such as Alan Gladstone, chairman, president, chief executive officer, and owner, Anna's Linens; G. Tommy Hodges, chairman, American Trucking Associations; J. Scott Bull, chief executive officer of Pace Industries; and Jerry Moyes, chairman of the Board, founder and CEO of Swift Transportation Co., Inc.

James W. Down

Prior to his retirement, James Down was Vice Chairman for Mercer Management Consulting, responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Oxfam America, Outward Bound, The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) Foundation, Care Group, Shawmut Construction, and Agility Holdings and he serves on the Board of Visitors for the Engineering School of Columbia University. He holds a B.S. degree in Engineering from Columbia University and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Tom Escott

Prior to serving as president of Schneider Logistics, and CEO of GeoLogistics Americas Inc., Mr. Escott founded ShipLogix, and held the role of president at Caliber Logistics Inc. (now operating as FedEx Supply Chain Services), where he achieved $700 million revenue growth in seven years and expanded the company’s international focus and establishment in Europe. Mr. Escott spent his early career in various roles as president and vice president of sales and marketing for transportation companies, including Whiteford Transportation, Ken-Dale Express and North American Van Lines. He also has experience as a transportation industry consultant. Escott holds a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Princeton University and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University.
