Dresser Waukesha Engine-Generator Installation Featured in ‘World’s Best Power Plants’ Issue of Diesel & Gas Turbine Worldwide

A prime example of a green power installation, the 1.1MW APG1000 generator set supplies all of the energy needs of an enormous farm with 100,000 pigs in The Philippines. At the same time, it generates energy cost savings and reduces the damaging effects of greenhouse gases.

The farm’s power plant is fueled exclusively by methane, a by-product of the digester process that treats the animals’ waste, and a true renewable energy resource. The power plant is a combined-heat-and-power (CHP) cogeneration system, which nearly doubles the energy that can be derived from burning fuel in the engine. In a CHP system, the engine drives the generator which produces electricity, while the engine’s “waste” heat energy is captured and used in various other essential farm processes, including warming the piglet nurseries and heating water for the farm’s feed mill.

In addition to using animal waste as an energy source, this installation helps prevent methane from being released into the air. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

The farm uses about 40 percent of the plant’s electrical power output. The remainder is sold to the local electric utility, thereby creating another revenue stream for the farm.
