CP+ 2010, Japan's First International Camera and Photo Imaging Show, Comes to a Close
March 19, 2010 3:27 AM
Major exhibitors included Epson Sales Japan, Olympus Imaging, Casio Computer, Canon Marketing Japan, Kenko, SIGMA Corporation, Sony Corporation & Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc, Tamron, Nikon Imaging Japan, Panasonic Corporation, FUJIFILM Corporation, HOYA/PENTAX Imaging, Ricoh and others.
Along with other industry organizations, CIPA had organized a series of Photo Imaging Expos (PIE) in recent years, but created this mega-event with an eye to publicizing the latest in photography and photo imaging originating from Japan, an epicenter of the global photographic industry. Receiving generous support from the city of Yokohama and the cultural facilities in and around the city, the event addressed every aspect of photo imaging entertainment from shooting to viewing and sharing.
"Earlier camera shows focused on the relatively larger camera markets in Europe and America, as manufacturers rather chose to announce new products at shows such as PMA in the USA or Photokina in Germany before introduction in Japan," said Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, CIPA, President of CIPA. "However, as we are in Japan, sometimes it is more convenient and effective to send information on new products and technologies worldwide, and spread photographic culture from here. We now have confidence that we can build CP+ into a world-class imaging exhibition in its own right."
Major events included "Photo Business Seminars" and "Imaging Technology Seminars" for exchange among industry specialists, and the "Enjoy Photo Stage" for photography enthusiasts. Other events included a retrospective of "Cameras and Photography from the Showa 30s (1955-1964)" by the Japan Camera Industry Institute (JCII), and a "Photo-Haiku" event with guests Yoshitaka Nakatani (cameraman) and Toshiki Boujo (Director of Association of Japanese Classical Haiku).
The "Communication and Yokohama" platform included joint events with the "Minato Mirai 21 Region" and "Yokohama China Town". The events provided a memorable experience for participants from all regions of the world, by way of the connection between the City of Yokohama and various activities centered on photography so vividly captured by CP+ 2010.
CIPA President Kikukawa emphasizes, "Photography is the Universal Language. A single photograph can create communication and convey understanding from one person to another in spite of different nationalities or language. We wanted Japan's first CP+ Event to celebrate the photography and imaging culture worldwide."
CP+ has its roots in Asia, but is set to expand its reach and influence around the world. With Japan's unique position at the center of the global camera industry, CP+ is sure to acquire a unique status in the imaging world and become an important venue for developing and propagating the culture of photography and the imaging field.
CP+ 2011, next year's Camera & Photo Imaging Show, is scheduled to be held in the same venue (Pacifico Yokohama) from Feb 9 to 12, 2011. For more information, please visit the exhibition website www.cpplus.jp/en/index.html.
