Coupon Mom saves families up to 75 percent on weekly groceries
Extreme couponing is not realistic for most families and certainly not the best way to eat healthy, and maintain your budget and sanity, says leading coupon website expert, Stephanie Nelson, also known as the Coupon Mom.
CouponMom.com now has more than three million members on its free website. Nelson says if a family knows some simple strategies, they can save over $6,000 on groceries in 2011. The site offers tutorial videos showing step-by-step directions for achieving fast and smart savings.
"I've been saving at least $100 a week on groceries since my first son was born 17 years ago," Nelson says, "That's a total savings of over $85,000, which is enough to pay for him to go to college."
"CouponMom.com has been around for ten years and we know that stocking up on grocery items is a key to cutting grocery bills, but it isn't necessary for a typical family to have extreme stockpiles. Items expire and they also cost money, even when they are a good deal. I've seen shoppers buy 60 bottles of soap at 85 percent off, but they still spent $18 out of that week's budget. The typical family would be wise to buy 4-6 bottles of soap when they are 85 percent off, spending less than two dollars, knowing that by the time they run out of soap, it will be on sale with a coupon again."
The key is to focus on what your actual spending is (not just the percentage saved) and buy items your family needs, says Nelson. She suggests focusing on meal planning and setting a spending limit, not a "percentage saved" goal so shoppers don't get caught up in a numbers game that leads to buying too much salad dressing and not enough salad!
CouponMom.com helps shoppers save by teaching "Strategic Shopping." The site offers free membership, tutorials, and the Grocery Deals by State section to make saving simple, listing the best grocery deals at thousands of supermarkets across the country. These lists combine sale prices with store promotions and coupons, helping any shopper achieve dramatic savings on healthy items families need.
Shoppers can use their cell phones in the store to find grocery deals and have coupons electronically loaded on their store loyalty card. CouponMom.com also has a mobile version to help shoppers create their shopping lists on the go.
Since 2004 Stephanie Nelson has appeared frequently on television teaching savings tips, including 'Oprah,' 'The Today Show,' 'Good Morning America,' CBS' 'Early Show,' 'NBC Nightly News,' 'The View,' 'Dr. Oz,' Fox and CNN.
'The Coupon Mom's Guide to Cutting Your Grocery Bill in Half,' released in January 2010, became a 'New York Times' Bestseller in its first month of publication and stayed on the best seller list for four weeks.
