Scott Summy http://baronandbudd.com/attorney_profiles/Scott_Summy, a shareholder at Dallas-based law firm Baron & Budd, P.C., was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2011 in the field of Mass Tort Litigation (Copyright 2010 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, S.C.). Summy heads the firm’s water contamination http://baronandbudd.com/legal_services/water_contamination practice and has been named to the prestigious peer review list every year since 2006.
Best Lawyers is the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. Each year, the publication compiles lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting confidential, exhaustive peer-review surveys of leading attorneys throughout the nation.
“I am extremely honored to be recognized by my fellow attorneys in this prestigious publication and be acknowledged for the work that is so important to me - to serve my clients who have been hurt by corporate malfeasance and to fight on their behalf,” said Summy.
Under Summy’s leadership, Baron & Budd’s water contamination litigation practice is recognized as among the largest of its kind nationwide. In 2008, Summy successfully litigated the first multi-jurisdictional MTBE groundwater cases in the U.S. http://baronandbudd.com/mtbe_settlement_press_kit. Working on behalf of over 150 plaintiff public water systems in 17 states, he won nearly $450 million in cash to settle and to pay future clean-up costs from defendants. Held to account were nearly all of the world’s largest oil companies, including BP. The Baron & Budd water contamination group currently represents over 30 water providers in Atrazine litigation.
Most recently, Baron & Budd has been retained by the State of Louisiana through the Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration to provide counsel to the state's designated Trustees in connection with issues related to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and resulting oil spill. The firm will provide a comprehensive evaluation of all environmental and economic damage and ensure that the state is fairly compensated for damage to its natural resources and economy. A June 2010 article in The National Law Journal http://baronandbudd.com/files/NLJ Summy article.pdf recognized Baron & Budd as one of the major law firms with experience fighting big oil.
