WESTLAKE, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Nordson Corporation NDSN is pleased to announce it has awarded a total of 132 college scholarships totaling nearly $500,000 for the 2016-17 school year through its Nordson BUILDS Scholarship Program.

"The mission of Nordson BUILDS is to attract and develop a diverse, highly-skilled talent pool for careers in the manufacturing industry," said Amonica Davis, Manager of Student Outreach. "It was created to serve as an economic and workforce development engine for Nordson Corporation and the manufacturing industry as a whole. Sixty-nine percent of the 2016-17 Nordson BUILDS Scholarship recipients are from an underrepresented group in manufacturing, including minorities and women. Forty-six percent of the female recipients are women of color."

"Nordson BUILDS identifies talent to fill the gaps of an aging workforce in manufacturing, introduces Nordson to academically motivated students pursuing technical-training programs and college degrees suitable for manufacturing careers, and helps those students meet the technical and educational demands required by an innovative, global manufacturing company," Davis adds.

Students across the United States in communities where Nordson has facilities are eligible to apply for Nordson BUILDS scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. The program is administered by the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC).

"The Nordson BUILDS Scholarship helps students access and complete postsecondary education at a two- or four-year institution, and addresses the rising cost of college tuition by lessening the financial burden on students and their families," added Davis. "Today's college students borrow and assume more debt than ever before, limiting their abilities to be self-sufficient and to contribute to the economic landscape of their communities upon college completion." In addition to Nordson BUILDS, which targets high-achieving students pursuing specific engineering-related; and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and business majors, Nordson has a long history of providing scholarships to worthy students, regardless of college major.

Nordson BUILDS is one of many programs Nordson employs to give back to the community. In fiscal year 2015, Nordson Corporation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation gave $8 million to charity, and employees volunteered thousands of hours through our Time ‘n Talent volunteer program.
