VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

American Water Works Company, Inc. AWK, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, today announced plans to build its new corporate headquarters on The Camden Waterfront. Groundbreaking for the company's new corporate headquarters building at One Water Street is planned for fall 2016 and construction is expected to be completed in the second half of 2018.

"We are very excited with the opportunity to build our new headquarters on the Camden Waterfront," said American Water President and CEO Susan Story. "The waterfront location and the business community that is being created here offers great benefits to our employees and allows us to become a more significant part of a community where we are proud to provide water and wastewater services."

"I am proud to welcome American Water to the City of Camden," Mayor Dana L. Redd said. "Our City is truly fortunate to have yet another outstanding corporate partner to call Camden home. American Water is dedicated to improving the lives of our residents and has already demonstrated their commitment by volunteering in various community events throughout the City."

American Water's new headquarters, which will be situated between the Ben Franklin Bridge and Campbell's Field to the north and Adventure Aquarium to the south, will consolidate approximately 600 current employees from its corporate functions, shared services and market-based businesses currently located in five of the company's leased southern New Jersey facilities.

"In addition to increasing our efficiency and ability to work collaboratively to meet customer needs, this new headquarters will reflect our culture," said Story. "Our employees are passionate about serving our customers, being stewards of the environment, being involved in our communities, and always working together to be innovative and be better at what we do, which is providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable water services. This will be a workplace we can take pride in and one that will help us attract future talent to our company."

The announcement followed the approval of the site selection by the N.J. Economic Development Authority (EDA) during its monthly board meeting on July 14, subject to a 10-day review period by the governor. The EDA in June 2015 approved a tax credit application by the company for its proposed relocation to Camden. Eliminating the operating costs of multiple facilities, along with the tax credits, significantly mitigates the cost of the project for customers.

The Camden Waterfront is a new, $1 billion development project by Liberty Property Trust that includes 1.5 million square feet of office space, as well as a hotel, retail and residential component.

"American Water's commitment to building a future in Camden is an important step in the realization of The Camden Waterfront development," said Liberty Property Trust Chairman, President, and CEO William Hankowsky. "We look forward to creating an inspiring corporate home for American Water and others in a resurgent Camden."

Robert A.M. Sterns is the architect for the new headquarters building as part of The Camden Waterfront development project. American Water has contracted with Gensler for the interior design of the building.

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. Marking its 130th anniversary this year, the company employs more than 6,700 dedicated professionals who provide regulated and market-based drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 15 million people in 47 states and Ontario, Canada.
