DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Dayton Power and Light (DP&L), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation AES, is partnering with The Foodbank and other area food pantries to distribute 160,000 energy efficient light bulbs to help families reduce their energy costs.

Families served will receive free ENERGY STAR certified Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs from DP&L. The free CFLs will help families save on their energy costs, allowing them to make other priority purchases.

CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and can save $30 or more in electricity costs over the lifetime of the bulb. The average home has 40 light bulb sockets. When incandescent bulbs are replaced with energy efficient CFLs, families may receive significant energy savings.

"Each year, The Foodbank provides meals for those in the Miami Valley who need assistance feeding their families. Again, this year, DP&L is proud to partner with The Foodbank for the distribution of energy-saving CFLs to deliver relief for our neighbors who may also be struggling with their energy costs," said DP&L President and CEO Tom Raga.

The CFL giveaway is another way DP&L contributes to the community through local food pantries for residents of the Miami Valley. Each year, our employees also donate to food drives and pantries throughout our 24-county service area and volunteer their time to these organizations. The Foodbank, located at 56 Armor Place in Dayton, will be hosting the 10 a.m. kick-off CFL distribution today. During the kickoff, DP&L volunteers will prepare boxes of CFLs for distribution.

DP&L will also be distributing CFLs through Shared Harvest Food Bank, 5901 Dixie Highway in Fairfield and at Second Harvest Food Bank, 701 E. Columbia Avenue in Springfield.

"DP&L offers generous support in our community, especially to those individuals most in need," says Michelle Riley, CEO of The Foodbank. "They are Hunger Heroes. The CFL giveaway is just one more example of their local contributions. Household items are very popular among the families served by our member agencies. To be able to provide these necessities, especially energy-efficient light bulbs, makes a real difference."

The CFL distribution is part of DP&L's ongoing energy efficiency efforts for customers, which also include rebates on new heat pumps and air conditioners, discounts on energy-efficient lighting, and rebates for business customers.
