Turning Political Strength into Action

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) March 31, 2016

On Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 the Women's Commission of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will host its annual National Women's Conference in Los Angeles, California. This year's conference, entitled Turning Political Strength into Action, will focus on bringing awareness to key issues that impact women's lives. LULAC is grateful for the support of The Coca-Cola Company, the Ford Motor Company Fund, Pfizer RxPathways, SER Jobs for Progress, Inc. National and others in helping make this conference a success.

During the two-day event, there will be workshops and seminars covering issues such as education, health, and DACA as well as discussing the role of women in media, business and entertainment. In addition, the following elected officials will be providing remarks in support of the women's conference: Congressman Xavier Becerra, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, and Councilwoman Nury Martinez. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

"The LULAC Women's Conference is an integral part of LULAC's effort to bring resources and information to the Latino community," said LULAC National President Roger C. Rocha, Jr. "We are very proud of the success this conference has achieved due to the commitment of the Women's Commission and the generosity of our corporate partners. Empowering Latinas through these conferences undoubtedly benefits the whole of our community."

The Latina voice in the U.S. continues to grow. Today, the Latina population in the U.S. is 16.4 percent of the female population and by 2050; it will have increased to 25.7 percent. In the political arena, Latinas remain underrepresented. In the U.S. Congress, today there are only nine Latinas out of the 98 Members who serve in the House of Representatives. It is important to note that five of those nine Latinas represent California. An informed Latina electorate can make a difference in political priorities and ultimately help improve the lives of those in the Latino community.

In addition, as part of LULAC's commitment to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, LULAC and Tyson Foods have joined efforts to distribute approximately 38,400 pounds of protein to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank – a donation worth $17,280. Through LULAC programs, services and advocacy, LULAC will continue to tackle important issues by making information and resources available to the community.

"An estimated 1.4 million people in Los Angeles County live with food insecurity," said Nora Venegas, director of federal government relations for Tyson Foods. "At Tyson Foods, we donate food because of the extraordinary organizations like the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank that work hard every day to see that people are fed in their communities. We couldn't do it without them."

"This generous donation of much needed protein is a great addition to the food and grocery items we distribute each week," says Agency Relations Director Elizabeth Cervantes. "Since 2002, Tyson Foods has provided over 700,000 lbs. of chicken to the Food Bank."

LULAC appreciates the support of Walmart, Walgreens, Southwest Airlines, and Tyson Foods as well as MGM Resorts International and Planned Parenthood Los Angeles for their partnership.
