NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT NTT, announced today that it has developed an artificial-intelligence (AI) technology, called Time-series Deep Learning, that analyzes time-series video data to identify specific human motions with high precision. In recent tests, NTT Com confirmed that Time-series Deep Learning can analyze video images taken with network cameras to distinguish between specific motions, such as people crouching, acting restlessly or moving things. Specific motions were identified with more than 80% accuracy.

Possible applications include detection of specific motions or behavior for preventing crimes or accidents in factories, understanding purchasing behavior, analyzing sports performance and more.
Existing technology mainly uses static images to analyze two-dimensional vertical and horizontal data. Time-series Deep Learning detects motions more precisely using three-dimensional data by adding a time axis. It can also analyze IoT data as it changes over time, such as temperatures or voltages recorded with sensors.
Main features
- Conventional deep learning (machine learning) methods use one-frame images for convolutional bonding to extract features by learning data locations and points. Time-series Deep Learning convolutes pixels in multiple sequential frames.
- Whereas existing Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) technology has been shown to recognize motions with less than 60% accuracy, Time-series Deep Learning achieved more than 80% accuracy in recent tests.
NTT Com plans to launch the Video Analysis Platform (tentative name) as a service that will use Time-series Deep Learning to analyze video data for various applications. Going forward, NTT Com aims to expand the new technology's use by combining video with from IoT device sensor data and logs. Also, tests will be conducted with partner enterprises on potential commercial services that leverage this technology.
Time-series Deep Learning will be exhibited at the NTT Communications Forum 2015, which will be held at the Prince Park Tower Tokyo in central Tokyo on October 8 and 9.
Background
Recognition of objects and people in static images has
dramatically improved with the use of deep learning technology, a form
of artificial intelligence (AI). However, high-precision recognition of
data which changes according to time series is still difficult.
Meanwhile, the increasing use of monitors and other network cameras, as
well as IoT devices such as cameras and sensors connected to the
Internet, are expanding the availability of collectable image data.
Businesses that can use this data are expected to grow as the
preciseness of video analysis improves.
