MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has accredited Capella University's PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program through March 31, 2020. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university which offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.

Accreditation by CACREP, which is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), provides recognition that the content and quality of an educational program has been evaluated and meets standards set by the profession.

"We are committed to providing our learners with the highest quality counselor education programs, as evidenced by our CACREP accreditation of a fourth program, the Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral program," said Anna Hultquist, PhD, LMFT, CFLE, Capella's dean for the counseling programs. "Our faculty, academic leadership, and staff enthusiastically support academic and clinical excellence as they help our learners achieve their career goals so they can make a difference in the lives of those they serve."

According to CACREP, its accreditation provides students who are researching an educational institution with the following:

  • Recognition that the program has been evaluated and meets or exceeds national standards.
  • Knowledge that graduates have met the majority of prerequisites for credentialing and are ready for professional practice.
  • Understanding that the focus of the program will be on the preparation of those who educate professional counselors.

Capella's PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program is now accredited through March 31, 2020. Capella's Mental Health Counseling program first received CACREP accreditation in 2003, and was followed by the Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy program in 2005 and the School Counseling program in 2009. In January of 2013 the eight-year accreditation of all three programs was granted.
