Chamberlain College of Nursing Accepting International Transfer Students at Chicago, Houston and Arlington Campuses

In an effort to meet increasing worldwide healthcare needs, Chamberlain College of Nursing is now authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant students interested in pursuing a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Nonimmigrant students will be able to choose among three approved Chamberlain campuses: Arlington, Virginia; Chicago, Illinois; and Houston, Texas.

The World Health Organization (WHO) cites several examples to illustrate how global healthcare needs are growing along with the population. English-speaking Caribbean nations, which in 2010 had 1.25 nurses for every 1,000 people — 10 times fewer than the European Union and the United States — will be short 10,000 nurses by 2025.¹ Across the Atlantic Ocean in Malawi, there are only 17 nurses for every 100,000 people; in India, nurse shortages occur at every level of the country's healthcare system. ¹ Millions of new nurses are needed to provide an adequate nurse-patient ratio.

Other issues that contribute to nurse shortages include a lack of nursing faculty and infrastructure to support higher education in many countries, prompting many international students to travel abroad for specialized education.² The number of international students in the United States has been growing exponentially for more than a decade.³ This year, approximately one million foreign students in the U.S. are enrolled in college degree programs, which is a 14 percent increase over 2014 and an 85 percent increase over 2005.³

Nonimmigrant students may enroll in one of the three participating Chamberlain campuses. Nonimmigrant students who meet Chamberlain's admission requirements may begin taking classes starting August 31 for the fall semester. Nonimmigrant students will participate in approximately 800 hours of experiential learning through simulations, skills labs and clinical training during their coursework; upon completing the BSN, they will have worked in diverse clinical settings, which will be invaluable as they return to their home countries.

Nonimmigrant students at Chamberlain will experience the same curriculum, classroom and lab experiences as domestic students, and will benefit from similar scholarship opportunities.
