released financial results on Wednesday morning that missed Wall Street earnings estimates, while beating revenue expectations. Alpha Natural Resources, Inc announced a 3rd quarter net income of $31.9 million, or 27 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $16.3 million, or 16 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding special items, the company reported earnings of 58 cents per share. Revenue rose to $1 billion, up from $729.25 million a year earlier. According to a poll of analysts by Thomson Reuters, the average Wall Street estimate called for earnings of 79 cents per share, on revenue of $983.28 million. Chief executive officer Kevin Crutchfield said, "In October we experienced a mine accident that resulted in the loss of a member of the Alpha family at our Kingston mine. This loss reminds us that the pursuit of safety is a journey without a destination and renews our commitment to ensure that every member of the Alpha team returns home safely every night. We are proud of our operations and the safety awards received by our PRB and CAPP operations during the past quarter, but make no mistake, our ultimate goal is very basic—to have an injury-free workplace.
