Leading online school provider releases next report in a series of white papers on academics and instruction

HERNDON, Va., May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- K12 Inc., America's leading provider of K-12 online school programs, released a new report showing the effectiveness of New Mexico Virtual Academy through strong school leadership, innovations in the classroom, and academic outcomes.

The full report can be found, here.

The report highlights New Mexico Virtual Academy (NMVA), the first statewide virtual charter school authorized by Farmington Municipal Schools in New Mexico, and describes how NMVA's strong school launch and innovations drove future successes.

"For its inaugural 2012-2013 school year, NMVA's overall school accountability rating was a B-grade, which the school maintained through the 2013-2014 school year as well," said Dr. Margaret Jorgensen, K12's Chief Academic Officer. "We worked closely with the NVMA team to discover what programs and initiatives that led to positive outcomes over the past two school years."

In Fall 2012 NMVA served students in 6-12 and expanded to 12th grade in the 2013-2014 school year. In Grades 3-8, the overall percentage of NMVA students at or above proficiency in Mathematics increased 9 percentage points. In 2013-2014, NMVA students scored higher than the state average in grades 6 and 8 in overall Mathematics proficiency. NMVA also students scored higher than the state average in grades 6 and 8 and equaled the state in grade 7 in overall Reading proficiency.

Historically in K12 partner schools, student persistence yields higher results.  Students who are enrolled longer tend to do better than those who are enrolled for shorter periods of time. Results at NMVA demonstrate that persistence matters. In Reading, NMVA students who have been enrolled longer have high proficiency percentages, and in Mathematics students enrolled one year but less than two outperform others.

The report attributes NMVA academic outcomes building a strong foundation at school launch. The school has strong leadership, a robust community with support and engagement, a culture of high expectations, innovations in the classroom, and having a strong emphasis on pathways after graduation.

Combined with NMVA's culture of setting and maintaining high standards of excellence, the schools has put increased emphasis on Individualized Learning Plans – customized programs to fit each student's unique strengths, learning styles, and aptitudes. The post-secondary focused initiatives have been establish to guide upcoming seniors on future planning.
