MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Thousands of associates from Kohl's Department Stores KSS are celebrating Earth Day by volunteering in their local communities during the company's sixth annual National Go Green event today through the end of June. Across the country, Kohl's volunteers will support youth-serving nonprofit organizations by participating in environmentally-based activities as part of Associates in Action, Kohl's associate volunteer program. In addition to holding volunteer events, Kohl's will donate corporate grants to each organization, totaling approximately $2 million this year and nearly $12 million over the six years of the program.

"Each year, thousands of Kohl's associates from around the country volunteer their time and talents to hundreds of deserving nonprofit organizations during Kohl's National Go Green, giving back to our communities by making them better places to live and work," said Bevin Bailis, Kohl's senior vice president of communications and public relations. "Volunteerism is at the heart of Kohl's and our teams of winning associates have rallied together to make an impact in cities and towns across America."

Throughout the event, groups of Kohl's associates will volunteer across the country for events including:

  • potting trees, constructing garden beds and bird houses, and transplanting native seedlings with Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful and the Urban Ecology Center at Kohl's Corporate Office in Menomonee Falls, Wis.
  • landscaping, beautifying grounds and running children's environmental activities with the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Foundation's CHOC Community Day in Los Angeles, Calif.
  • collecting and cleaning toys for donation with eco-friendly cleaning solutions to reduce non-biodegradable waste in landfills with Second Chance Toys in Philadelphia, Pa.

Since 2001, through the Associates in Action volunteer program, Kohl's associates nationwide have participated in more than 176,000 volunteer activities resulting in nearly $100 million in corporate grants. When associates form teams of five or more to support a local youth-serving charity, the company supports the team's participation with a corporate grant given directly to the nonprofit. Associates in Action is part of Kohl's overall philanthropic platform, Kohl's Cares®, which also includes the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program, Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program, Kohl's Cares fundraising gift card program and partnerships with more than 160 hospitals nationwide.

In addition to supporting environmentally-based volunteer activities during the National Go Green Event, Kohl's strives to be a leading environmentally responsible retailer through strategies that include sustainable operations, stakeholder engagement and supply chain collaboration. Most recently, Kohl's received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR 2015 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award, and EPA's 2014 Sustained Excellence in Green Power Award.
