WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Wireless Innovation Forum commended the FCC on its announcement today of a Report and Order for the 3.55 GHz band and reiterated the Forum's support for the advancement of spectrum under the proposed FCC Part 96 rules. The Forum also stated appreciation for the collaborative efforts of federal stakeholders, including the NTIA and DoD which were integral to this development.

"We welcome this announcement and look forward to reviewing the rules once they are published in the Federal Register," said Bruce Oberlies of Motorola Solutions MSI and Chair of the Wireless Innovation Forum. "Our Spectrum Sharing Committee members have been working hard to lay the ground work for successful advancement of commercial deployment and incumbent protection in the 3.5 GHz band. The Forum members are excited to see this continue to move forward with the Commission's leadership."

The Spectrum Sharing Committee (SSC), announced in February (http://groups.winnforum.org/d/do/7966), includes broad representation from Industry and Defense working to establish the foundation for successful spectrum sharing through a dynamic three-tier model as envisioned by the FCC. The Spectrum Sharing Committee presently supports four working groups, each collaborating working on separate aspects of a common goal: to ensure that the 3.5 GHz band can be successfully commercialized. The SSC working groups are:

  • Operational and Functional Requirements (Interoperability Focus)
  • Security Requirements
  • Protocol Specifications
  • Testing and Certification

The SSC is prepared to also address expanding the spectrum that is available for sharing under the proposed FCC Part 96, which provides a regulatory and licensing framework that can be readily and rapidly applied to additional bands where database-enabled spectrum sharing is desired. Forum members assert that it is in both the government's and industry's interest that new spectrum sharing opportunities are approached with integrated and consistent regulation and technical implementation.

The Wireless Innovation Forum welcomes all interested organizations to participate in the Committee. To learn more about membership options or to apply for membership in the group please visit: http://www.wirelessinnovation.org/join.
