Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) GWR today reported traffic volumes for March 2015 and the first quarter of 2015.
G&W's traffic in March 2015 was 164,261 carloads, a decrease of 3,732 carloads, or 2.2%, compared with March 2014. G&W's same-railroad traffic in March 2015 was 155,096 carloads, a decrease of 12,897 carloads, or 7.7%, compared with March 2014. Traffic from G&W's Freightliner acquisition, which was completed on March 25, 2015, is not included in this press release.
G&W's traffic in the first quarter of 2015 was 476,737 carloads, an increase of 9,358 carloads, or 2.0%, compared with the first quarter of 2014. G&W's same-railroad traffic in the first quarter of 2015 was 452,168 carloads, a decrease of 15,211 carloads, or 3.3%, compared with the first quarter of 2014.

Same-railroad Highlights:
The following highlights relate to same-railroad traffic, excluding traffic from the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad, which commenced operations on June 1, 2014 and the Arkansas Midland Railroad, the Prescott & Northwestern Railroad and the Warren & Saline River Railroad, which were acquired on January 5, 2015.
- North American traffic decreased 10,618 carloads, or 7.2%, primarily due to decreases in coal & coke, metals and other commodity group traffic.
- Australian traffic decreased 2,279 carloads, or 10.8%, primarily due to decreased agricultural products and metallic ores traffic.
- Coal & coke traffic decreased 5,980 carloads, or 19.4%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W's Central, Ohio Valley, Midwest and Mountain West regions.
- Metals traffic decreased 4,236 carloads, or 27.7%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W's Southern, Ohio Valley and Northeast regions.
- G&W's Other commodity group traffic decreased 2,737 carloads, or 33.0%, primarily due to decreased overhead Class 1 shipments.
- All remaining traffic increased by a net 56 carloads.

- Australian traffic decreased 3,818 carloads, or 6.6%, primarily due to decreased metallic ores and agricultural products traffic, partially offset by increased minerals & stone traffic.
- Metals traffic decreased 7,324 carloads, or 17.7%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W's Southern, Northeast and Coastal regions.
- Coal & coke traffic decreased 6,691 carloads, or 7.8%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W's Central, Mountain West, Ohio Valley and Northeast regions, partially offset by increased shipments in G&W's Midwest Region.
- Minerals & stone traffic increased 4,414 carloads, or 9.0%, primarily due to increased shipments across most G&W regions.
- All remaining traffic decreased by a net 5,610 carloads.
Other
Historically, G&W has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. Car movements related to railcar switching, including activities at port terminals, are excluded from our carload information as the resulting revenues are classified as non-freight.
