CBOE Holdings Reports March 2015 Trading Volume

- Total Volume of 94.9 Million Contracts Traded

- ADV of 4.3 Million Contacts Down From Prior Month, Year Ago

CHICAGO, April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- CBOE Holdings, Inc. CBOE reported today that total trading volume during March for options contracts on Chicago Board Options Exchange® (CBOE®) and C2 Options ExchangeSM (C2SM) and futures contracts on CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE®) was 94.9 million contracts, an increase of seven percent versus February 2015 and a decrease of 12 percent from March 2014.    

Total options and futures average daily volume (ADV) at CBOE Holdings during March was 4.3 million contracts, a decrease of seven percent from February 2015 and a decrease of 16 percent from March 2014.

CBOE Volume: March  

  • CBOE's ADV during the month was 3.8 million contracts, down eight percent from February 2015 and down 18 percent from March 2014.  Exchange-wide trading volume totaled 84.4 million contracts, an increase of six percent from the previous month and a decline of 15 percent from a year ago.
  • During the month, ADV in exchange-traded product (ETP) options increased two percent, index options declined eight percent and equity options declined 14 percent from February 2015.

CFE Volume: March  

  • March exchange-wide ADV at CFE was 167,656 contracts, a one-percent increase from February 2015 and a nine-percent decrease from March 2014. Exchange-wide total volume during the month was 3.7 million contracts, a 16-percent increase from the previous month and a four-percent decrease from a year ago.   
  • March ADV in futures on the CBOE Volatility Index® (VIX® Index) was 167,591 contracts, an increase of one percent from February 2015 and a decrease of nine percent from March 2014. Total volume in VIX futures for March was 3.7 million contracts, up 17 percent from the previous month and down four percent from a year ago.

The following represents average transaction fee per contract based on a three-month rolling average, reported on a one-month lag. The average transaction fee per contract represents total transaction fees for CBOE, C2, and CFE recognized for the period divided by total contracts traded during the period. Average transaction fees per contract can be affected by various factors, including exchange fee rates, volume-based discounts and transaction mix by contract type and product type.
