PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. JEC announced today that it was awarded a contract to provide Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) services for Sydney Rapid Transit, a major new rail project in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

The project is part of the NSW Government's 20 year Sydney Rail Future plan to improve the public transportation network in an effort to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population.

The new 18.6 mile (30 km) project will extend the North West Rail Link (for which Jacobs is currently contract manager) via a tunnel under Sydney Harbor. At least three new train stations are planned for the Sydney Central Business District (CBD) plus two additional stations north of the city, providing connections across Sydney.

When complete, the new rail system will aim to deliver a train every two minutes through the heart of Sydney, allowing for 60 percent more trains during peak hours across the rail network and serving an extra 100,000 people per hour.

Under the terms of the new EIA contract, Jacobs is working closely with the government, customers, local communities and businesses to assess the impacts of the project.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Michael Shirley said, "We are delighted to continue our work with the NSW Government on another important element of its strategy to improve Sydney's transport network. We will be working closely with all stakeholders to deliver the best possible outcomes for all those impacted by this high profile project."

Jacobs is one of the world's largest and most diverse providers of technical professional and construction services.
