CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 18, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ExploreLearning®, a member of Cambium Learning® Group, Inc. ABCD, announced the findings of a new two-year research study showing that struggling students who used their award-winning math fact fluency program, Reflex®, saw substantial gains on a widely used, nationally normed mathematics assessment.

ExploreLearning Reflex helps students develop quick and effortless recall of basic math facts in all four operations through game-based instruction and practice. By adapting to each student's needs, it delivers an optimized learning experience that engages and motivates. Students already have answered more than 8 billion math facts in Reflex, increasing their skill, confidence, and test scores.

The research study examined students in grades 2–5 at seven Charlottesville City Schools in Virginia, where Reflex has been in use for two years. Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) math test results of high-usage students were compared with those of students with low or no usage over the two-year period from fall 2012 to spring 2014.

Results showed that students who used Reflex for 60 or more days over the duration of the study grew substantially more than those who used the program for 15 days or fewer, with initially lower-performing students seeing particularly large gains. Students who started at or below the 25th percentile of students nationally on the NWEA MAP gained an average of 31 percentile points. Fully 79 percent of these students moved out of the lowest quartile over the course of the two years, and over 30 percent moved into the upper half of students nationally.

"The fact that the MAP is a general mathematics assessment encompassing far more than just computation makes these results particularly impressive," said David Shuster, Ph.D., founder and president of ExploreLearning. "Students who can recall their math facts quickly and effortlessly can confidently focus their intellectual capacity on new concepts and procedures rather than struggling with basic computations. We are especially pleased that the effect seems to be so strong for the students most in need of support."
