VENICE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Venice High School is taking steps to further protect their athletes by implementing the Play It Safe Concussion CareSM Program developed by Wells Fargo Insurance, part of Wells Fargo & Company WFC. The Play It Safe Concussion Care program coordinates injury education and awareness with insurance coverage specifically for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of concussions. Through this program, all Venice High School athletes are covered under an excess insurance policy that pays for eligible medical costs related to the injury that aren't covered by the athlete's primary medical insurance or when its limits have been met, up to $25,000 with no deductible or co-pay.

By offering the Play It Safe Concussion Care Program, Venice High School will now be able to help remove the financial obstacle in seeking the best care for their athletes, and parents can be confident when it comes to deciding when, or if, to return their child to play.

“The health and safety of our student athletes are top priority, and we are always looking for better ways to protect them,” said Trenton Cornelius, Interscholastic Athletics Coordinator. “Combined with baseline testing, we feel the Wells Fargo Play it Safe program will give us helpful information so we can provide the best safety and care for our players.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate more than 38 million youths ages 5 – 18 participate in organized youth sports in the United States. The CDC also cites concussions as one of the most commonly reported injuries in children and adolescents who participate in sports and recreation activities, with nearly half a million emergency room visits made each year by youths treated for traumatic brain injury.

“The Play It Safe Program will further help Venice High School in its mission to develop youth athletes with a valuable concussion care program,” said John Breckenridge, senior vice president of Wells Fargo's Student Insurance Division. “With care and protocol similar to those afforded to professional athletes, we can help ensure young athletes safely return to an activity they enjoy.”
