Duquesne, FirstEnergy, PECO and PPL Celebrated for Energy Efficiency Achieved in Pennsylvania

The Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance (KEEA) is pleased to announce the Duquesne Light, FirstEnergy, PECO and PPL Electric Utilities as winners of its annual Energy Champion Award for distinguished achievement of Act 129 implementation and energy conservation. FirstEnergy will be honored with the award on behalf of the performance of its four Pennsylvania electric distribution companies, Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed), Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), Penn Power and West Penn Power. The awards will be presented to the electric utilities on November 13th at the KEEA Conference 2014: The Utility of the Future in Harrisburg.
As part of Act 129's energy efficiency and conservation program, Pennsylvania's electric distribution companies with at least 100,000 customers were charged with reducing energy consumption by three percent between June 1, 2009 and May 31, 2013 and developing energy efficiency programs for all their customers. Each utility honored more than met the target, leveraging a variety of industrial, commercial and residential efficiency measures and incentive programs to collectively surpass the original goal by 23% and conserve 5,403,370 megawatt hours each year.

Act 129 was a major policy initiative for KEEA, and the work of its stakeholders in conducting a statewide public education and advocacy effort led to the bill's passage in October of 2008. The Act 129 program is now in the midst of Phase II, which focuses on additional energy efficiency, conservation and education programs through May 31, 2016.
