Alibaba Group Holding Ltd BABA reported better than expected results for the second quarter.

  • Delivers revenue of $5.142 billion, exceeds estimates by $0.112 billion.
  • Revenue from core commerce jumped 41 percent.
  • Mobile monthly active users jump 30 percent on a year-over-year basis and 5 percent on quarter-over-quarter basis.

CEO Daniel Zhang said, "Alibaba Group had a great quarter. Our results reflect our increasing ability to monetize our 450 million mobile users through new and innovative social commerce experiences. Beyond the strong performance of our core commerce business, we are pleased with the continued rapid growth of our cloud computing business. We also see huge potential in our newly integrated digital media and entertainment unit. By combining engaging online experiences with highly relevant content, we delivered impressive financial and operational results in the quarter across the company."

Following the results, the stock advanced 2.52 percent to $103.70 in the pre-market session.
