4 Stocks Moving In After Hours: Earnings, Dividends, Buybacks & Declining Comps

U.S. markets closed down on Thursday trading, putting an end to a three-day run-up, as oil futures tumbled. Let’s take a look at what’s going on in the after-hours session.

Shares of H & R Block Inc HRB, which gained 2.52 percent on Thursday trading, ahead of its earnings report, continued to surge (more than 7 percent) in after-hours, following the announcement of the company’s fourth quarter financial results. EPS of $3.16 and revenue of $2.3 billion beat estimates by $0.01 and $20 million, respectively. In addition, management declared a 10 percent increase in its quarterly dividend, to $0.22 per share. The forward yield now stands above 4 percent.

Completely opposite was the case of Mattress Firm Holding Corp MFRM, which tumbled 2.24 percent during the day, and an extra 11.5 percent since the bell rang in the afternoon, driven by a top and bottom line miss. The company reported a first quarter net loss of ($0.10), $0.06 larger than the Street expected. Revenue of $839.39 million also missed estimates by $27.81 million, even though it came in 49.2 percent higher than a year ago.

Back to gainers, there’s Applied Materials, Inc. AMAT, which was up more than 1.5 percent since the market closed on Thursday, helped by the announcement of a new $2 billion share repurchase program, which will follow the previously announced the $3 billion stock buyback program. In addition, the company’s Board of Directors approved a quarterly cash dividend of $0.10 per share payable on September 15, to shareholders of record as of August 25.

Finally, Urban Outfitters, Inc. URBN was down about 6.55 percent in after-hours trading, after the company warned that second quarter same-store sales in its retail segment were declining by mid single-digit percentage points.
