7 Things Every Tesla Investor Should Know Today

  • Tesla Motors Inc TSLA has lost over $30 in share price since hitting a high of $265 in early April amid outstanding Model 3 preorders.
  • For several weeks after this, proxy data showed Tesla was the most expensive stock to short on the market, indicating it's short-sellers No. 1 stock they want to bet against.
  • Analysts, including Citron, have warned that Tesla's price spike above the $200 level is primarily driven by shorts closing their positions -- barely any of it is done by bullish, long-term buyers.
  • On the plus side, Tesla's 325K Model 3 preorder number indicates it may in fact be able to hit its enormous FY2020 guidance of 500K deliveries.
  • On the negative side, Tesla did miss Q1 delivery guidance, indicating to some it might miss FY2016 estimates. UBS analysts, for one, say demand for the Model S/X could be slowing.
  • The one crazy idea that's making waves: Some analysts, like Gene Munster, think Apple Inc AAPL will buy Tesla. With Tesla, Apple gets the auto technology it desperately wants and it also gets the most innovative leader on the planet, Elon Musk. It's been thrown around by multiple experts that it's not insane to think of an Apple-Tesla buyout partially as a "talent acquisition," where Musk will be made CEO of Apple (Tim Cook is better at operations, not innovation, anyway.)
  • If Tesla were to be sold to Apple, Tesla could fetch a value in the $310 to $340/share range at least, given historical industry M&A premiums.
