Markets were up on Monday, driven by a surge in oil and gold prices. However, major U.S. stock indexes ended up closing slightly down.
The S&P 500 ended up losing 0.27 percent, partly driven by Endo International plc - Ordinary Shares ENDP, which fell 8.02 percent.
The Dow Jones Industrial Index was down 0.12 percent. The largest loss was the one seen at Nike Inc NKE, which fell 2.51 percent.
The Nasdaq 100 Index tumbled 0.36 percent, with the largest loser being Mylan NV MYL, down 3.06 percent.
The largest gainer in these indexes was Chesapeake Energy Corporation CHK, which gained 19.68 percent after the company announced an amendment to its $4 billion secured revolving credit facility agreement which matures in 2017.
Earnings
Alcoa Inc AA was down about 3.5 percent in after-hours trading. The lightweight metals manufacturer posted first quarter earnings of $0.07 per share, $0.05 above the Street’s consensus, on revenue of $4.95 billion, which missed the already-low expectations by $190 million, and implied a 14.9 percent year-over-year decline in sales.
