After-Hours Recap: Bed Bath & Beyond, Apollo, Valeant, eBay & More

U.S. stock markets closed higher in a day where oil rose more than 5 percent. The S&P 500 rose 1.05 percent, the Dow, 0.64 percent, and the Nasdaq 100, 1.59 percent. Among the stocks in these indexes posting the largest moves:

  • Pfizer Inc. PFE, up 5.01 percent
  • Baker Hughes Incorporated BHI, up 8.76 percent
  • Endo International plc - Ordinary Shares ENDP, up 8.62 percent
  • Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated VRTX, up 8.5 percent
  • Harley-Davidson Inc HOG, down 7.02 percent
  • Incyte Corporation INCY, up 11.62 percent

A few stocks moving in Wednesday’s after-hours session:

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. BBBY was up about 4 percent following the announcement of the company’s fourth quarter results. Earnings of $1.85 per share came in $0.04 ahead of estimates, while revenue of $3.42 billion beat consensus by $30 million. The firm declared its first-ever quarterly dividend; shareholders of record on June 17 will receive $0.125 per share.

Apollo Education Group Inc APOL also reported its quarterly results. The company delivered a second quarter net loss of $(0.31) per share, $0.21 wider than analysts expected.

Alder Biopharmaceuticals Inc ALDR announced the commencement of a public offering of $100 million of its Common Stock.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc VRX, which gained 18.83 percent Wednesday after Board member and Pershing Square CEO Bill Ackman said the company might have a new CEO in a matter of weeks, rather than months, rose an extra 5.5 percent after-hours. The move seemed to be driven by reports the company had received majority approval from creditors to revise its loan agreements. According to sources cited by Dow Jones, the agreed on higher fees and rates in exchange for "leniency" on filings.

eBay Inc EBAY lost almost 1.5 percent after ChannelAdvisor released its March same-store sales report, which included disappointing data for the online marketplace operator, which saw same-store decline 0.2 percent. Results were much better for Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN, which witnessed a 14.9 percent same store sales increase over March.

  • Emerson Electric Co. EMR named Sara Yang Bosco as General Counsel
  • Crestwood Equity Partners LP CEQP and BlueStone Natural Resources II, LLC entered a 10-year agreement to gather and process natural gas in the Barnett Shale.
  • McDonald's Corporation MCD’s 12-year Chairman, Andrew McKenna, announced his retirement. The company named him Chairman Emeritus after his decision was made public.
  • FirstService Corp FSV acquired Century Fire Protection, but terms of the deal were not disclosed yet.
