Commodities
In commodity news, oil traded up 2.76 percent to $33.19, while gold traded down 0.05 percent to $1,115.70. Silver traded down 1.51 percent Thursday to $14.24, while copper fell 1.04 percent to $2.04.
Eurozone
European shares were lower today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 slipped 1.55 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index declined 1.82 percent, while Italy's FTSE MIB Index tumbled 3.11 percent. Meanwhile, the German DAX dropped 2.16 percent, and the French CAC 40 slipped 1.27 percent, while U.K. shares fell 1.14 percent.
Economics
US jobless claims dropped 16,000 to 278,000 in the week ending January 23. However, economists were expecting claims to reach 282,000 in the week. US durable-goods orders declined 5.1 percent in December. The pending home sales index rose to 106.8 in December, versus a downwardly-revised reading of 106.7 in November. Supplies of natural gas slipped by 211 billion cubic feet for the week ended January 22, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said. However, analysts were expecting a decline of 204 billion cubic feet to 208 billion cubic feet.
