posted a profit in the fourth quarter. XL Group posted a quarterly profit of $81.4 million, or $0.27 per share, versus a year-ago loss of $515.5 million, or $1.62 per share. Its operating income came in at $0.13 per share. Net premiums written rose 19% to $1.34 billion in the period. However, analysts were expecting an operating loss of $0.35 per share. XL Group's total expenses dropped 15%. XL Group shares gained 0.07% to $27.86 in after-hours trading.
