Alpha Natural Resources Inc (NYSE: ANR) reported a strong rise in its third-quarter profit. Alpha Natural Resources lifted its 2012 coal shipment forecast by 500,000 tons to 23.5 million to 26.5 million tons. Alpha Natural Resources' quarterly profit surged to $66.4 million, or $0.29 per share, from $31.9 million, or $0.27 per share. Excluding some items, Alpha Natural Resources' adjusted earnings from continuing operations came in at $0.35 per share. Its revenue climbed to $2.3 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.04 per share on revenue of $2.06 billion.
Kellogg Co (NYSE: K) reported a 14% drop in its third-quarter net income. Kellogg's quarterly earnings fell to $290 million, or $0.80 per share, from $337 million, or $0.90 per share, in the year-ago period. Its shares outstanding declined 3.5% to 363 million. Kellogg's sales rose to $3.31 billion from $3.16 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.89 per share on revenue of $3.41 billion.
Progress Energy Inc (NYSE: PGN) reported a 19% drop in its third-quarter earnings. Progress Energy's quarterly profit declined to $291 million, or $0.98 per share, from $361 million, or $1.23 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding special items, Progress Energy's ongoing earnings came in at $1.16 per share. Its revenue fell 7.3% to $2.75 billion. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $1.25 per-share on revenue of $3.04 billion.
Sara Lee Corp (NYSE: SLE) swung to a FQ1 loss and lowered its full-year sales forecast. Sara Lee lowered its full-year sales forecast to $7.9 billion to $8.15 billion, versus its earlier view of $8.5 billion to $8.75 billion. Sara Lee posted a quarterly loss of $215 million, or $0.37 per share, versus a year-ago profit of $194 million, or $0.29 per share. Excluding some items, Sara Lee's earnings from continuing operations came in at $0.18 per share. Its sales surged 13% to $1.94 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.17 per share on revenue of $1.98 billion.
CVS Caremark Corp (NYSE: CVS) reported a 7.3% rise in its third-quarter earnings. CVS Caremark's quarterly profit surged to $868 million, or $0.65 per share, from $809 million, or $0.59 per share, in the year-ago period. Its earnings from continuing operations came in at $0.70 per share. CVS Caremark's revenue gained 12% to $26.67 billion. CVS Caremark in August estimated earnings of $0.66 to $0.68 per share on net revenue growth of 10.5% to 12.5%.
Portland General Electric Co (NYSE: POR) reported a 45% drop in its third-quarter earnings. Portland General Electric's quarterly profit declined to $27 million, or $0.36 per share, from $49 million, or $0.65 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue dropped 5.4% to $439 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.46 per share on revenue of $462 million.
Tenaris SA (NYSE: TS) reported a 21% rise in its third-quarter earnings. Tenaris' quarterly profit surged to $365.5 million, or $0.55 an ADS, from $302.7 million, or $0.52 an ADS, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed 23% to $2.49 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.55 an ADS on revenue of $2.52 billion.
NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX) reported a rise in its third-quarter net profit. NYSE Euronext's quarterly net profit climbed to $200 million, from $128 million, in the year-ago period. Its revenue surged to $704 million from $599 million.
Embraer SA (NYSE: ERJ) swung to a Q3 loss. Embraer posted a quarterly loss of 200,000 Brazilian reais ($115.606), versus a year-ago profit of BRL220 million. Its revenue gained to BRL2.27 billion from BRL1.82 billion. Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose to BRL311.3 million, from BRL227.4 million.
Western Refining Inc (NYSE: WNR) reported a rise in its third-quarter profit. Western Refining's quarterly earnings surged to $84.9 million, or $0.81 per share, from $6.9 million, or $0.08 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding negative hedging impacts, Western Refining earned $1.37 per share. Its revenue gained 18% to $2.4 billion. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $1.35 per share on revenue of $2.1 billion.
Lamar Advertising Co (NASDAQ: LAMR) reported a surge in its third-quarter earnings. Lamar Advertising expects Q4 revenue of $284 million, versus analysts' estimates of $282 million. Lamar Advertising's quarterly earnings climbed to $3.9 million, or $0.04 per share, from $690,000, or a penny per share, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $0.07 per share. Its revenue gained 3.7% to $296.7 million. The company earlier projected revenue of $293 million.
Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp (NYSE: BAH) reported a rise in its fiscal second-quarter earnings. Booz Allen's quarterly profit climbed to $75.3 million, or $0.53 per share, from $14.8 million, or $0.12 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding some items, Booz Allen earned $0.36 per share. Its revenue surged 4.5% to $1.43 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.36 per share on revenue of $1.44 billion.
PPL Corp (NYSE: PPL) reported a 79% surge in its third-quarter profit. PPL lifted the bottom end of its full-year earnings view by $0.05 per share to $2.55 to $2.75 per share. PPL's quarterly profit climbed to $444 million, or $0.76 per share, from $248 million, or $0.51 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue surged 43% to $3.12 billion. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $0.70 per-share on revenue of $3.05 billion.
NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG) swung to a Q3 loss on Thursday. NRG Energy posted a quarterly loss of $57 million, or $0.24 per share, versus a year-ago net income of $221 million, or $0.87 per share. Its revenue fell to $2.67 billion from $2.69 billion. Cost of operations surged to $2.05 billion from $1.84 billion.
Eastman Kodak Co (NYSE: EK) reported a wider Q3 loss on Thursday. Kodak's loss from continuing operations came in at $222 million, or $0.83 per share, versus a year-ago loss of $43 million, or $0.16 per share. Its sales dropped 17% to $1.46 billion. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $0.44 per share on revenue of $1.65 billion.
Elizabeth Arden Inc (NASDAQ: RDEN) reported an 89% surge in its fiscal first-quarter earnings. Elizabeth Arden's quarterly profit surged to $9.2 million, or $0.31 per share, from $4.9 million, or $0.17 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, Elizabeth Arden earned $0.31 per share. Its sales surged 6.6% to $303.5 million. Elizabeth Arden in August estimated earnings of $0.25 to $0.30 per share on sales of $295 million to $305 million.
