Only In New York: 'Charging Bull' Sculptor Hints Lawsuit Against 'Fearless Girl'

Charging Bull wants Fearless Girl to get out of his way.

“Fearless Girl” -- the popular sculpture of a young lady facing down Manhattan’s famous Charging Bull -- distorts the original work of art and should be taken down, the bull’s sculptor told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday.

Arturo Di Modica said that the girl changes the positive message of the bull sculpture, which is "a better America and a better world."

His lawyer, Norman Siegel, said the girl's presence makes the bull "representational of male dominance and Wall Street." Siegel called it copyright infringement and said the artist is considering a lawsuit.

"We're not saying that it should be moved out of the city. It just needs to be placed in another place," said Siegel.

The Italian-born Di Modica spent two years welding the 7,000-pound bronze bull, then installed it under cover of night 28 years ago. It was meant to illustrate New York’s resilience in the face of the 1987 stock market crash.

City officials removed it from the front of the New York Stock Exchange, then reinstalled it at a small public space in the financial district.

The Fearless Girl statue as a counterpoint has proven immensely popular with tourists as well as typically difficult-to-please New Yorkers.

Unlike Charging Bull, however, Fearless Girl went up with a permit, and she has remained because of popular support.

Whether the court of public opinion trumps an actual courtroom, however, remains to be seen.
