Galentine's Day: Lilith Fair, Minus The Angst

"Parks and Recreation" lovers are more than familiar with the concept of "Galentine's Day," but the rest might be scratching their heads.

NBC's "Parks and Recreation" featured an episode in which Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) invented a holiday that takes place the day prior to Valentine's Day.

Knope said the day will be known as "Galentine's Day" and involves the ultimate girls day out.

"Oh, it's only the best day of the year," the character said. "Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas."

Her character emphasized that February 14 is "about romance" but the prior day is about "celebrating lady friends."

"It's wonderful and it should be a national holiday," she also said.

Well now it is... sort of.

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc WMT announced that 1,000 of its stores will sell "Galentine's Day" themed merchandises, including decorations, party supplies and gifts.

Wal-Mart noted that the products are "aged up" with fun phrases such as "fries before guys," "sisters before misters," and "cheers my dear."

"We're always looking for new ways to delight customers," the company stated. "We started working on the Galentine's Day program last April. It was a reimagining of our "Anti-Valentine's Day" assortment that featured sayings like "Cupid is Stupid." We wanted to do something with a more positive message."
