Investors Sell Tesla's Delivery Numbers

Some analysts are expecting a better 2017 for Tesla Motors Inc TSLA, but its 2016 delivery numbers leave a little to be desired.

Of the 83,922 vehicles that Tesla produced last year, the electric carmaker delivered 76,230 vehicles. In Q4, the company delivered about 22,200 vehicles, 12,700 of which were Model S and 9,500 was Tesla's luxury SUV, the Model X.

“Our Q4 delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct,” the company said in a press release on Tuesday.

In October, Tesla’s guidance called for 50,000 new vehicles during 2H 2016, and saw Q4 deliveries at just over 25,000 units.

“Vehicle demand in Q4 was particularly strong, Q4 net orders for Model S and X, which were an all-time record for us, were 52% higher than Q4 2015 and 24% higher than our previous record quarter in Q3 2016,” said Tesla.

The company said short-term production challenges starting in October and lasting through December due to a transition to new Autopilot hardware caused Q4 vehicle production to weigh more heavily towards the end of the quarter and managed to still hit its production goals.

Tesla shares were down 2 percent at $212.26 in Tuesday's after-hours session.
