Google Pixel Wins On Black Friday

Watch out Apple Inc. AAPL, there may be a serious smartphone competitor in town. New data suggest Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL's new Pixel smartphone was the real winner on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

A research report from Localytics analyzed both Android and Apple device activations since Thanksgiving. During this time, Google’s Pixel experienced a 112 percent growth of new device activations.

These figures are a bit misleading, however, due to the short duration the Pixel has been available for sale. It went on sale in October. In comparison, Samsung's Galaxy S7 had a 36 percent increase in activations, while the iPhone 7 had just 13 percent growth.

“The Pixel is a very impressive device. While already receiving critical praise, the Pixel models are also beginning to meet analyst’s sales expectations, which is very good news for Google,” said Localytics.

Apple had a much stronger 2015 when it came to activations around the same period, with a 36 percent increase in iPhone 6S activations during Thanksgiving of last year.

It looks like the battle everyone is anticipating in the smartphone space, Google vs. Apple, will soon heat up. This is likely just the beginning.
