At 10:30 am, the Dow fell 0.55 percent to 18,062.85, the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index moved down 0.33 percent to 2,134.37 and the NASDAQ composite index declined 0.05 percent to 5,239.29.

The industries that are still afloat in the market today are:

  • Cigarettes: This industry gained 3.7 percent by 10:30 am. The top stock within the industry was Reynolds American, Inc. RAI, which gained 16 percent. British American Tobacco PLC (ADR) BTI made a $47 billion takeover offer for the roughly 58 percent of Reynolds American that it doesn’t already own — a move that would cement the two cigarette giants’ longstanding trans-Atlantic ties and create the world’s largest listed tobacco company by revenue and market value.
  • Business Software & Services: This industry rose 2.9 percent by 10:30 am ET. The top performer in this industry was Microsoft Corporation MSFT, which gained 4.3 percent. Microsoft reported stronger-than-expected results for its first quarter on Thursday.
  • Regional - Pacific Banks: The industry gained 0.6 percent by 10:30 am. The top performer in this industry was SVB Financial Group SIVB, which gained 7 percent. SVB Financial posted strong Q3 results.
  • Communication Equipment: This industry moved up 0.5 percent by 10:30 am. The top performer in this industry was DragonWave, Inc.(USA) DRWI, which rose 4 percent.
