Amazon Takes Aim At Etsy with 'Handmade' Marketplace

There is something about quality handmade goods that corporations just can't duplicate. Handcrafted goods from Italy? Some of the best in the world.

Just one day after marketplace competitor Etsy Inc jumped 10 percent, Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN announced it is rolling out "Handmade at Amazon" in the U.K., Germany, Spain, France and Italy.

Since the new marketplace launched last October in the United States, handcrafted product sales grew five times to over 500,000 items in volume. This move could be a key play to capture more European customers, a continent renowned for its handmade products.

"When we introduce a new business at Amazon we think long-term and globally. Since launch, we've received feedback from customers and artisans around the world that they want a Handmade at Amazon store in their local marketplace. With our focus on genuine handcrafted products, the Handmade at Amazon store has been a big hit with artisans and customers," said Amazon Director Steve Johnson.

The growth Handmade at Amazon is experiencing is opening its business up to a different kind of consumer and seller in its marketplace, just one more step Amazon is taking to dominate e-commerce.
